You do not have to be a pro athlete to come see us, but if you are we are your best bet!
Holly created MpowerD to be a place where athletes could come and recover from hard workouts, games, and events, maintain their bodies to endure the overuse and abuse put on their bodies, and rejuvenate physically and mentally.
Sports Massage - A note from Holly about why DIPLOMACY matters!
Diplomacy is having the wisdom and skill that is coupled with willingness to know when, where, and why to apply or not to apply leverage.
Defining Sports Massage varies from provider to provider and even instructor to instructor. Often times if a person goes to a big box massage establishment and asks, "What does is mean to get a sports massage?" the answer may be, "We do really deep work, " or "We do deep tissue and then stretch you." This is not what Sports Massage is supposed to be! I would suggest finding an establishment that specializes in athletes.
Let's get a few things cleared up...
1. Sports Massage IS NOT just for those who play sports! Everyone can benefit from the vast techniques that make up Sports Massage.
2. A safe and appropriate Sports Massage can only be done IF the therapist knows the context under which it will be given; pre-event, post event, maintenance, etc.
3. Sports Massage can at times be very uncomfortable but this does not mean is has to be extremely painful. There is not a "NO PAIN, NO GAIN" concept.
4. Although the absolute best time for massage is within 2 hours of a strenuous workout (decreases DOMS pain at 48hours), anytime helps a great deal!
So as an MpowerD Therapist, we have been trained in dozens of different techniques, sometimes in a long certified program, perhaps a one-day training, or an online class, and probably most beneficial, with our colleagues. At MpowerD we spend a number of hours each month learning and sharing information and trying to improve our assessment skills, treatment modalities, and follow up plans. Then we constantly challenge ourselves on how to handle different clients and their needs. This lends it to the opening sentence of "Diplomacy is having the wisdom and skill that is coupled with willingness to know when, where, and why to apply or not to apply leverage. "
We have the option to use any technique we believe will relieve your pain, free up your tissue, and make you perform better! We love having that freedom. We realize it is a serious responsibility and at every decision we use diplomacy! We consider all that you have said and what your goals are and we come up with the treatments and techniques to help you. This takes a deep understanding about soft tissue, movement, pain patterns, etc.

IMPORTANT: Myths die hard; we all know that. After over 28 years of massage therapy experience with athletes this is what we've learned! (This is not and never should be considered medical advice. Although we are licensed by the Board of Nursing in Virginia, and we can make assumptions on your injury, we cannot diagnose anyone with anything).
